Deep crimson with garnet hues. This stunning 60th vintage has incredibly fragrant aromas of ripe plum, blue and black berry fruits, spice, sage and fresh bay leaf with notes of tar and cedar.

These aromas follow through to the palate with rich, complex, concentrated dark fruits, spice and herbaceous nuances, tightly wound balanced acidity, textured layers and fine, long velvety tannins.

James Suckling (JS) : 98 Points (2016)
This has intense spice and sage, as well as bay-leaf aromas with intense, vivid blackberries and red plums. Blueberry notes, too. There’s so much spice, violet and bergamot, together with black tea-like notes. The palate has an immaculately framed tannin structure with rich blackberries and blueberries, as well as plum notes. This layers up so nicely on the palate. Very intense and powerful yet fine texture. An exceptional vintage for Mt. Edelstone. From vines planted in 1912. Drink or hold.

Decanter (DCT) : 97 Points (2016)
Powerful but unobtrusive tannins – like an engine purring – support dark, perfectly ripe blackberry, mulberry and plum fruit, with hints of strawberry, red fruit leather and smoked charcuterie notes from the oak. Spice and dried herb nuances unfurl over three days, beautifully articulating the terroir and its 104-year-old vines through notes of black pepper, sage, tea tree, star anise, mint and cardamom. Ripe and refreshing redcurrant sustains the sweet, spiced fruit through the long, sinuous finish. Terrific purity, poise and panache. (3/2021)

James Halliday (JH) : 97 Points (2016)
The vineyard was planted in 1912, hand-picked, matured in 80% French and 20% American hogsheads (19% new). The vintage was challenging, but this shiraz shows no sign of that. It is full-bodied, very complex and very long, the tannins expertly massaged and drawn under the fruit. Blackberry, tar and bitter dark chocolate all contribute to what will be a very long-lived wine. (8/2020)

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2016)
The 2016 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz is steeped in complexity, with aromas ranging from camphor, bay leaf and sage to smoke and grilled beef and from blueberries and blackberries to plums laced with spice. Full-bodied, rich and intense, it's ripe and velvety textured, with a long, licorice-tinged finish and dusty tannins that bode well for the cellar. From vines planted in 1912, I suspect this will come close to the quality of the Hill of Grace at a fraction of the price. Tasted again the following day from the open bottle, this was even better, seamless, flowing and harmonious in the mouth.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 95 Points (2016)
Excellent colour, deep and youthful with strong purple tints. The bouquet is robust and concentrated, mixed spices, led by pepper and earthy notes, a trace of eucalyptus-mint, rich and dense as it is also in the mouth. A collossus of a wine. There's a lot of charry oak input and this tinges the aftertaste with a little bitterness. A powerhouse of a shiraz, and quite heavily extracted, but also superb. Long-term. (HH) (3/2021)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2016)
Aromatic and elegant, but definitely not shy, showing rich, pure wild blackberry puree, huckleberry and blueberry pie flavors on a silky frame, with details of Earl Grey tea, palo santo, cigar box and salted dark chocolate. Ends with a tremendous finish that goes on and on. Drink now through 2046.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 96 Points (2015)
From one of South Australia’s most historic vineyards (planted in 1912 and bottled as a single-vineyard wine since 1952), Henschke’s Shiraz ripples with flavor, texture and length. Sun-puckered plum and cherry, milky cof- fee with cocoa powder, ground pepper, beet, baking spices and warm stone all roll over the senses. Pow- dery, spicy tannins juxtapose the juicy, silky fruit. Drinking nicely now but should cellar beautifully for 20 years or more.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2015)
The Mount Edelstone vineyard was planted in 1912 by Ronald Fife, a descendant of George Angus Fife, a founder of South Australia. Cyril Henschke made the family’s first wine from the property as a single-vineyard shiraz in 1952. The vines, now tended by Stephen and Prue Henschke, are dry farmed on their own roots in deep red-brown clay-loam and clay. Those shiraz vines, now more than 100 years old, provided an earthy 2015 with a balsamic note to its ripe perfume of raspberries and cherries, lasting on bittersweet cherry-pit tannins. The fruit is youthfully pungent, with the kind of purity – or lack of excess – that bodes well for a long arc of development in the cellar.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2014)
(produced from vines that were planted in 1912) Bright purple. Expansive cherry, cassis, pipe tobacco and vanilla scents on the intensely perfumed nose, lent urgency by a subtle mineral overtone. Fleshy dark fruit liqueur, floral pastille and mocha flavors are supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Becomes spicier with aeration and displays a suave blend of depth, power and energy. Finishes sweet, smooth and extremely persistent, displaying youthful tannins and lingering dark berry and peppery spice qualities.
