Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2018)
The 2018 Keyneton Euphonium is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and carries a profusion of dusty black tannin and brooding purple fruit. There are notes of meat broth, field mushrooms, fresh leather, blackberry, brown sugar and a molasses character. I know from some of the other Henschke reds that the fruit actually rises above the structure with a decant (or time in the glass), so this is recommended in order to catch the beautiful 2018 fruit on offer here. This is a savory wine—layered and long.

Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2015)
Fresh, pungent, purple blackberry fruit dominates the nose, then deeper tar, liquorice, cassis and molasses sweetness before the Eden Valley Shiraz signatures of sage and bay leaf add verve. Very complex. The palate dries to a bony savouriness – a nod to the strength and muscle of Keyneton Shiraz, putting added steel into the structure of this wine. A taut acid line and sturdy yet understated tannins keep the flavours bright and long, through to a soft finish. Such measured power and drive suggests a long life in the cellar.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2015)
This vintage of Henschke’s Shiraz dominant red blend (with includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Cab Franc) is ones of its most approachable. Still showing off an air of aristocratic polish, it is highly herbal and a little sanguine, with notes of baked plum, tomato leaf, beef in hoisin sauce and stony minerals. Silky in texture, tannins are spicy and sexy, slinking along a spine of laser-like acidity and ending on a long, herbal note.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2015)
Rich plum and plum-cake aromas with redder tones, too. Some dried-herb undertones. A ripe and rich style with plush and very rich, enveloping tannins that carry a very supple array of blackberries and plums. A blend of 66% shiraz, 19% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 5% cabernet franc.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2014)
There’s a distinctive overtone of black walnut here, adding a note of maturity and complexity to the core of wild strawberry and raspberry flavors, with aromatic details of dried porcino, green tea and spice box. The tannins are taut, firming on the finish and suggesting that time in the cellar will make this even more expressive. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2035.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 90 Points (2014)
Named for the B-flat euphonium that was part of the Henschke Family Brass Band in the 19th century (and is still in the family today), this is a blend of shiraz with cabernet sauvignon, franc and merlot. It comes from vineyards in Eden Valley and Barossa, where some of the vines date to the 1960s. It has a high-toned elegance, skinnier than many of its full-bodied cousins in the region, but concentrated and firm. You might find strawberry flowers and scents of grilled sausage, herbs and black peppercorns in this lean red that leaves room for food.

James Halliday (JH) : 90 Points (2014)
57% shiraz, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 5% cabernet franc, 53% from the Eden Valley, 47% from the Barossa Valley, matured in 92% French and 8% American hogsheads for 18 months. A quixotic blend at the best of times and will always bring logistical complexities into play, complicated further by the trial and tribulations of '14. It is complex, savoury and minty, and carries the Henschke stamp of authenticity. But it stops there.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92+ Points (2012)
Inky ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, pipe tobacco, vanilla and dried flowers, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering densely packed black and blue fruit flavors and a hint of licorice. The vanilla and floral notes come back on the sweet, penetrating finish, which is framed by youthfully chewy, building tannins. Give this promising wine some air or bottle age.
