Costa Russi nose is generous, floral and sweet with intense aromas of rose and violet, blood orange, red berries, liquorice and turmeric. The palate is fleshy, loaded with red and dark berry notes, such as mulberry, red currant, black cherry.

The soft and round tannins balance the good acidity and lead to a wine with a certain volume. It is the most inviting and generous of the three Gaja single vineyards.

The story of this estate’s ascendancy is captivating, full of passion and innovation. The Gaja name was established in the region in the 1850s when Angelo’s great, great grandfather Giovanni Gaja moved to Piedmont and then set up a tavern in the lovely village of Barbaresco. Since then 5 generations of the Gaja family have been involved in the winemaking process. Angelo Gaja joined the business in 1961, taking over the reins from his father Giovanni. It was at this point that the… Read more

Lavender and sage with berries and dried strawberries, but so perfumed and subtle. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are totally integrated with finesse and beauty at the end. Caresses your palate.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2020)
Fresh and pure, evoking cherry, raspberry, rose, iron and woodsy aromas and flavors, this is complex and solidly built, with a touch of creaminess to its texture and a superlong, expressive finish. Combines finesse and intensity.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2017)
In terms of production numbers, this is one of the smallest vintages we've seen from the Costa Russi vineyard. Thanks to replanting efforts, about half of the old vines were ripped out in 2017 (compared to the 2016 vintage that made 10,000 bottles with the whole vineyard in production). The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco Costa Russi offers a warmer and softer character compared to Sorì San Lorenzo and Sorì Tildìn. Overall, the wine is richer and more textured. I definitely taste the vintage heat with its slightly sweeter and more accessible tones of cherry, cassis and fragrant blue flower. Costa Russi is usually defined by lifted notes of aniseed and sambuco, and you get those here too, although they are a less pronounced in this vintage. This is a balanced and carefully assembled Barbaresco with a lean approach backed by fine tannins and bright acidity.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2017)
Falling in between the Sori Tildin and Sori San Lorenzo stylistically, the 2017 Barbaresco Costa Russi offers a ripe bouquet of mulled cherry and blackberry fruits intermixed with lots of balsamic, licorice, loamy soil, dried spices, and a touch of asphalt. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, elegant Barbaresco with broad, mouth-coating tannins, a solid core of acidity, and a great finish. As with all of these wines, it need lots of air to shed some austerity and pick up more sweetness in its tannins (which can be common for hot vintages) and is going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and have two decades of prime drinking. (12/2020)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2017)
The 2017 Barbaresco Costa Russi is gorgeous. Dark, layered and wonderfully inviting, the Costa Russi expresses the restrained style of the vintage and yet has terrific depth. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and star anise build as this sumptuous, classically mid-weight Barbaresco shows of all of its pedigree. The 2017 is a lighter Costa Russi, there is no doubt about that, but this is also the most complete of the three single vineyard Barbarescos. (AG) (10/2020)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2017)
More developed than the Barbaresco 2019, with senescent red fruit but not yet that full tertiary undergrowth aroma. Gorgeously seductive while still being slim and lithe. Darker and more savoury than the Barbaresco, firmer and drier. Very long. 17.5++/20 points (JH) (9/2022)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 97 Points (2016)
Costa Russi, a ten-acre plot just below Sorì Tildìn in the Roncagliette MGA, enjoys southern and western exposures; in 2016, it produced a beautifully aromatic wine. It opens with a garden of floral and herbal scents that lead into precise flavors of red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. Notes of soft herbs and green spice weave through the fruit tones, buoyed by lively acidity that propels the flavors to a long, elegant finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2016)
Dark-skinned berry, coconut and balsamic aromas of eucalyptus shape the nose along with a whiff of rose petal. On the tense, youthfully austere palate, taut, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity support red cherry, cranberry, orange zest, brown pepper and a hint of tobacco. Give it time to fully develop. Drink 2024–2041.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2015)
From a cooler, hillside site to the southeast of the appellation with heavier clay and limestone soils. This expresses a cooler style of Nebbiolo, leaning towards a Pinot Noir flavour profile. It has a floral character with a gorgeous perfume of citrus notes and raspberries. Pure red berry sweetness with succulent, juicy acidity and racy tannins. Stunningly elegant, this is delicious and desirable now. Wonderful to drink or keep. Aged in 30% new oak.Drinking Window 2018 - 2035

This is 'Super Tuscan' which means they tend to use more international grape varieties in their wines. This wine in particular is made Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This is a very rich, complex wine, with dark berry fruit flavours and hints of tobacco, chocolate and spice.
