More information on wine critics and ratings

Wine region: Tuscany, Italy, specifically the Chianti Classico DOCG subzone. This historic region is world-renowned for its Sangiovese-based wines, characterized by their vibrant acidity, firm tannins, and distinctive flavors of cherry, plum, and earthy notes.

Vineyards: Fontodi sources grapes from various organically farmed vineyards across the Chianti Classico appellation, ensuring a diverse representation of the terroir. Vines are situated on rolling hillsides with predominantly calcareous soils, contributing to the wine's mineral character.

Winemaking: Fontodi adheres to organic and biodynamic principles throughout the winemaking process. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine matures in a combination of large oak barrels and concrete tanks, allowing the fruit to shine while preserving its freshness.

Tasting notes:

  • Color: Deep ruby red with garnet reflections.
  • Aroma: A harmonious blend of red and black fruit notes, such as cherry, plum, and blackberry, intertwined with earthy hints of violets, tobacco, and Mediterranean herbs. Some vintages may reveal subtle oak influences of spice and vanilla.
  • Palate: Medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and balanced tannins. The palate echoes the aromas, offering juicy fruit flavors complemented by savory earthiness and subtle oak nuances. The finish is lingering and harmonious, leaving a pleasant impression of depth and character.

Food pairing: This versatile Chianti Classico pairs well with various dishes, including grilled meats, pasta dishes with tomato sauce, roasted vegetables, and aged cheeses. Its balanced acidity also makes it suitable for enjoying alongside lighter appetizers or pizza.

The Manetti family has owned Fontodi since 1969, but has been in Chianti for centuries - though they have always made wine, their primary business is still the production of Chianti’s finest terracotta at their factory in Ferrone. The same attention to detail that makes them the best producers of terracotta has been brought to bear on Fontodi over the past 40 years, and has transformed a Giovanni Manetti has run the property since 1980, building a new cellar in 1998 and ensuring that the… Read more

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2020)
Subtle aromas of sliced strawberries and cherries with some orange peel follow through to a medium body with succulent tannins and a bright and tangy finish. Lovely energy in this one. So good now. From organically grown grapes.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2020)
Rich and velvety, laced with black cherry, blackberry, violet and mineral flavors. This is driven by vibrant acidity and backed by well-mannered tannins. Shows excellent balance and length.

Decanter (DCT) : 92 Points (2020)
This flagship Chianti Classico from the renowned Fontodi estate has grown over the years to its current annual production of 170,000 bottles, however it has not lost its identity, deeply rooted in a sun-drenched stretch of Panzano’s Conca d’Oro. The 2020 version has all the ripe dark fruit and assertive tannins that come so neatly into balance. Grilled meat, baked earth and thyme flirt with black plum. The youthful juiciness has the energy to carry this over the next eight or so years. It finishes with its signature bitter liquorice twist.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2020)
A certified organic wine, the Fontodi 2020 Chianti Classico shows dark fruit and blackberry with earthy sensations of crushed stone that reflect the schistous soils found in this area of the appellation. Unlike the Filetta di Lamole (with fruit from Lamole) that is very floral in personality, this expression from Panzano has more structure, girth and general fruit weight.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2019)
Delicate aromas recalling scorched earth and truffle mingle with mocha and botanical herbs on this 100% Sangiovese. Elegant and enveloping, the supple palate features fleshy plum, orange zest and baking spice before an espresso finish. Soft tannins offer supple support.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Chianti Classico is fresh, vibrant and so expressive. Aromatic and expansive, with terrific nuance, the 2019 is one of the most elegant Chianti Classicos I have tasted at Fontodi. Crushed flowers, red/purplish fruit, spice, lavender and pipe tobacco build into the delineated, vibrant finish. (AG) (6/2022)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2016)
Mid crimson. Powerful, perfumed nose with a flirty oak note and bags of aromatic marasca cherry fruit and muscular tannins on the palate. Great balance. Ageworthy. 17/20 points. (WS) (2/2019)
