Craggy Range was founded in 1997 when Terry Peabody and Steve Smith MW set about seeking out and buying the best vineyard sites in New Zealand. They planted them with vines best suited to each terroir with the ambition to produce single vineyard wines that would compete with the best in the world. It is this simple philosophy that drives the entire system of farming and winemaking at Craggy Range. The wine team is headed by Steve Smith MW in his role as Director of Wine and Viticulture. While this wine used to include only the Abel Clone from Block 16, it now includes some Clone 115 for its red fruit and perfume. The 2016 Aroha Pinot Noir delivers a sexy combination of red raspberry and black cherry-cola fruit, outlined by dried spices and a seamless, silky texture. It's medium to full-bodied, with an expansive but elegant mid-palate and a focused, richly layered finish. Just lovely stuff.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2014)
A seamless, supple expression of Earl Grey tea, plum pudding and huckleberry flavors, with tannins providing some traction on the finish. Vanilla and clove details linger. Drink now through 2026.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 95 Points (2013)
A selection of grapes from the mid-slope of Craggy Range’s Martinborough vineyard. A warm vintage allowed the use of 40% whole bunches in the ferment. Dense, rich wine with plum, red fruits and an interesting savoury dimension adding extra complexity. Classy wine that should develop well.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2013)
A barrel selection off Craggy Range’s estate vineyard in the Te Muna Road area of Martinborough, this isn’t a huge blockbuster style, but one that favors elegance. The aromas and flavors are ripe, oozing with hints of plum, black cherry, cola and licorice, but what makes the wine special are its subtle spice shadings and silky texture. Drink now–2025.

Decanter (DCT) : 92 Points (2013)
Gold Medal Decanter World Wine Awards: Complex and attractive nose with a savoury richness to the supple red fruits, aided by waxy floral notes and aromas of forest floor and toast. Silky and lithe, there's real density to the palate which holds enticing mocha and spice characters, combined with a creamy richness and great length. Subdued, youthful, darkly fruity, with savoury and spice undertones; structure and bite; promises to be an excellent expression of the bigger, riper style.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5+ Points (2011)
Two parcels from Te Muna Road. 100 cases. Very closed nose. Spiced, slightly cooked fruit on the palate – but totally fresh too. Bitter finish – very compact and brooding. (RH)
