Aromas of red fruits with hints of clove and ginger.
On the palate combines focused red fruit flavours with a dry character with a long finish marked by Cockburn’s signature ‘grip’. The Cockburn 2016 displays archetypal schistous-soil structure, complexity and length.

James Suckling (JS) : 99 Points (2016)
This shows fantastic graphite and dark-berry character with black-stone undertones and hints of dried roses. Full-bodied and very tight and precise. Good kick in the end. Love the polished tannins, which are totally folded into the wine. Reminds me of the 1947 Cockburn. Try in 2024

Wine Spectator (WS) : 96 Points (2016)
This is quite primal, with lush plum, blackberry and açai berry reduction rolling through, pushed by warm licorice and Black Forest cake notes. A substantial bass line thumps on the finish, showing plenty of sparkly spice and incense details hitting the top range. Best from 2030 through 2050.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2016)
A Douro Superior blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca supported by Sousão and Alicante Bouschet. Relatively closed and restrained on the nose but with an underlying ripeness with intense dark cassis backed by powerful yet fine-grained tannins, big and broad on the finish. This is a wine for the long haul and excellent value – Cockburn is truly back on form. Total production of 2,450 cases.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2016)
The wine has structure, swathes of juicy fruit and acidity along with fine tannins. It is certainly balanced with deliciously luscious fruit, and a rich texture that is suggesting good aging potential. Drink from 2028.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2016)
The 2016 Vintage Port, bottled in May 2018, is a blend of 62% Touriga Nacional, 21% Touriga Franca and small portions of Sousão and Alicante Bouschet. It comes in with 106 grams of residual sugar. Fairly intense and even tighter than Graham's, this might be somewhat approachable in a few years, but it really needs to open up. It will require more time than the wines like Warre's and Smith Woodhouse in the Symington stable. Beautifully wrought, this looks like an impressive Cockburn's, more balanced and fresher than the stolid and jammy 2015 yet still with fine concentration to go with the freshness. There were 2,450 cases produced.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 18 Points (2016)
The Douro Superior port shipper rescued by the Symingtons from its multinational phase in December 2010. The principal source is the 97-ha vineyard at Quinta dos Canais and, even further east, the 13-ha vineyard at Quinta do Vale Coelho. Dark crimson with a mere hint of ruby at the rim. Lifted and silky. This immediately makes a claim to be a top-drawer wine on the nose. Very round with a savoury, herbal, dry finish but absolutely gorgeously sweet and fresh on the palate. Just a little heat on the end but this is a very convincing sign that Cockburn is back on form, even if it may not be one of the longest living, Drink 2035-2065

One whiff of the Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive and your sense of smell is instantly pervaded with ham hock, celery root, brown spices, mint and honey. Primary juices include rose petals and spice and a dusty botrytis character to follow. This is a lusciously sweet and complex wine.
