This is a ripe and juicy style of Chardonnay with flavours of pineapple, peach and citrus fruit. It’s also got some soft, creamy vanilla flavours. It’s a soft, easy-drinking sort of wine which is ideal for people who don’t like their wine too dry.

Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyards in Mendoza in 1902. Malbec had been a blending grape in Bordeaux, but Nicola suspected it would find its hidden splendor in the Argentine Andes. Fast forward sixty years and Nicola’s grandson Nicolas took the reigns of the family firm. The 2021 Catena Chardonnay is vibrant and harmonious, with great balance and freshness, varietal with elegant and shy aromas of white flowers and a long, dry finish with purity of flavors, unnoticeable oak and very good overall balance.

Peaches, baked apples, apricot pie and lemon curd on the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a creamy, succulent palate. Clean and fresh.

Spiced apple, raw oak and related cinnamon and woodspice aromas introduce a flush, chunky palate that's showing modest acidity. Flavors of savory oak, tropical fruits and baked apple finish creamy in feel, with flavors of papaya and vanilla.

Mar/Apr 16. By Stephen Tanzer. Pale, bright yellow. Clean, cool aromas of pear and peach lifted by white flowers. Offers good texture and palate coverage but only modest nuance. Juicy acidity gives shape to the finish but I'd drink this wine in the next couple years. This was once a full-malo wine.

Tasted May 2013 - Pale greenish gold. Has the ripeness of Mendoza but a strong cool-climate streak of freshness and minerality, with the oak well integrated. Very slightly sour on the finish but more sophisticated than many a Mendoza Chardonnay. (JH)
