Notes of ocean breeze with elegant fragrances of slightly candied citrus, rhubarb and pink grapefruits and hints of green peppers, in which the minerality is a highlight. On the palate it is saline and juicy at the same time with a clear and elegant acidity which continues together with the long finish of this wine. This is a great example of a seductive and fine wine that can be enjoyed for drinking now, or in a few more years.

Viticulture

The vines are around 14 years old yielding 4 tons per ha. Chalk and granite soils and a coastal climate due the proximity to the ocean which is only 4 km away. Average temperatures of 15°C. In summer temperatures are not higher than 27°C. Morning fogs and frosts occur in spring and early summer. No rain falls during the growing season. Grapes are specially handpicked from 7 different small blocks according to their soil profile. They try to harvest when the berries are crunchy and not too ripe.

Winemaking

Grapes are manually sorted by hand, leaving behind unwanted green materials. The must is cold macerated for 24 hours then gently pressed for 3 hours. The juice is chilled down to 5 degrees and then racked off the lees. It ferments at 12-14°C with yeast for 3 weeks in stainless steel vats. No acid corrections

Robert Parker (RP) : 93+ Points (2017)
One of my favorite varietals from the country is the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Cipreses Vineyard, a vineyard-designated bottling that has the grape character in a style closer to Sancerre than other regions in the world. It's pungent, sharp, quite complete, fresh and linear, with good concentration and balance. It should evolve nicely in bottle. Bravo! 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2017.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 95 Points (2015)
Maria Luz Marin and her son Felipe specialize in sauvignon blanc at their family estate in the remote coastal village of Lo Abarca. Cipreses is a steep hillside of granite and limestone facing directly west, exposed to the winds off the Pacific less than three miles away. The wine is infused with oceanic flavors, the saltiness of the air and the spiky green-herb scents of the surrounding coastal scrub. But mostly, there’s fruit: bold tropical lime and cherimoya layered in ripeness and textural complexity. Pour it with roasted razor clams, or bring a bottle to the beach, for lobsters roasted with corn and potatoes in a sand pit this summer.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2015)
This is a sauvignon blanc with weight and character with loads of gunpowder and flint undertones. Full body, velvety texture and a long and flavorful finish. Love the mouthfeel to this.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2009)
A lean, bracing style, with chalk dust, fleur de sel, thyme, white asparagus and lime notes that all extend through the bracing, lengthy finish. Very chiseled. Drink now through 2011. 2,415 cases made.

Aromas of bright cherry and red berry with hints of cool climate cranberry framed in whips of smoky peat hearth fire. Flavours are bright, with firm acid structure supporting the same fruit tones perceptible in the aroma—very persistent! Finish lingers with long, late acid backbone carrying the red berry late into the aftertaste.
