Invitingly rich, with textbook mineral intensity slicing through bright peach and fresh grapefruit flavours. Exhibits ginger and nutmeg spiced notes. Balanced beams of oak and fruit complexities are focused by a refreshing lemon rind finish. Lingers effortlessly.

Starting with a deeper nose than the Crocodile's Lair Chardonnay, the 2018 Missionvale Chardonnay begins with baked apples and pears and lemon tart with nutty, vanilla tones from oak usage. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is broad and rich with an oaky essence and sweet citrus tones before a soft nuance of mushroom comes into focus. The wine concludes with a spiced finish that persists with flavors of baklava and creamed corn.

Offers ripe pear, fig and yellow apple fruit, with racy edge. Hints of matchstick, honeysuckle and chamomile stretch out the lengthy finish.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 88 Points (2013)

June 2015. By Stephen Tanzer. Very pale color. Aromas and flavors of peach, nut oils, clove and musky lees. In a sweeter, richer style than the Crocodile's Lair; nicely concentrated but with lower acidity. The brown spice element carries through in the mouth. Higher in both alcohol (13.4%) and residual sugar (2.5 g/l) than the Crocodile's Lair, and less refined and brisk.

Deeper in colour and more intense than the same winery’s Crocodile’s Lair (Kaaimansgat) Chardonnay, this is mostly made from clone 95. Honeyed, buttery and stylishly oaked, it’s quite a New World style, but the richness is supported by stony minerality and an acid flourish. Drink: 2014-18

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16.5 Points (2012)

Tasted Oct 2015 - First impression is inviting green fruit, citrus and smart but subtle oak. Much better than the Galpin Peak Pinot just tasted. Dry, slightly chalky/stony on the palate, not especially long. (JH)
