More information on wine critics and ratings

Nose: Very expressive red fruit bouquet, especially ripe red cherry, with a nutty edge reminiscent of almonds and broken cherry stones. Medium bodied, with scant presence of the oak adding to the feeling of lightness and freshness it provides.

Palate: Silky smooth, medium bodied, very fresh and well textured. The oak is hardly evident, with round, well integrated tannins, giving way to a lingering finish of seasoned red fruits that make it light and fresh. It perfectly showcases the quality of this vintage, in this case adding youth and freshness to the depth and ripeness of the seasoned fruit so prevalent in this vintage.

A pretty nose of blackcurrants, plums, incense, stones and chocolate. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Sleek, juicy Rioja.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2017)
The lightest of the wines here is the 2017 Sela, a wine they think is destined for the by-the-glass market and light foods. It was produced with grapes (mostly Tempranillo but always with small percentages of other grapes, 3% Graciano and 2% Garnacha) fermented with indigenous yeast and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. It has a clean and precise nose, the house style, with ripe fruit and oak but without any excess, quite balanced and with freshness and enough power. Very tasty and easy to drink.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2016)
Full berry and plum aromas are ripe, lightly spiced and inviting. A fleshy, full-bodied palate features bold tannins, while this delivers sizable black-plum, blackberry and savory oak flavors. Rubbing tannins create texture on a deep finish. Drink through 2022. Valkyrie Selections

Tim Atkin (TA) : 91 Points (2016)
Sela is the bodega's entry point red, partly made with purchased grapes across the region, and is a cuvée of Tempranillo with 7% Graciano and 6% Garnacha from the Rioja Oriental. It's a comparatively easy drinking style, but still has a little of that magic Roda touch, with supple red berry fruit, floral top notes and a dash of oak. 2020-24

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2015)
This is Roda’s most accessible wine, focused on ripe fruit flavors. It’s all black cherry at the center, supple and rich, savory rather than sweet. The pleasure it offers is simple and straightforward, modern in its clean lines, classical in its tempranillo flavor depths. What’s impressive about the wine is how resistant to oxygen the flavors are, sustaining their freshness over the course of several days.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2015)
This firm red shows black cherry, plum, licorice, smoke and underbrush flavors, supported by well-integrated tannins and orange peel acidity. Shows depth and focus. Drink now through 2027. 8,000 cases made.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2012)
Nov 2015. By Josh Raynolds. Bright ruby. Fragrant aromas of ripe red berries, candied rose and incense. Spicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering juicy flavors of raspberry, bitter cherry and allspice. Shows very good focus and lift--and repeating red fruit and floral notes--on the long, gently tannic finish. This wine went through its secondary fermentation in large French oak foudres and was then moved into small, used French oak barrels for another year. -- Josh Raynolds

With explosive blackberry, herb and mineral aromas and monstrously dense, ripe, crushed cherry fruit and noble tannins, this is one of the great red wines of the world.

Honeysuckle and citrus scents are immediately apparent with slight aromas of nougat, roasted nuts and a sniff of strawberry from the Pinot Noir. Delicate fruits and creaminess wash through the mouth leaving a lingering finish of citrus and nougat.
