This wine has an intense, almost inky black, colour.

On the nose black fruit aromas outstand together with cherries and white mulberry. Figs and an elegant spiciness with a mineral touch.

On the palate, there is a nice crisp acidity. The mid palate is robust and with great concentration.

The tannins are ripe and fine grained giving the wien some structure and balance.

Not only is it the oldest winery in Argentina, but also has the world’s highest vineyard. Located in the Upper Calchaquí Valleys in Salta in the far north of Argentina, the winery is thought to have been founded by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. Blackberries, dark spices, oyster shells and graphite with a lift of violets. A full-bodied malbec with round, polished tannins. Very primary with plush fruit. Showing complexity without referring to oak. Really delicious now.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2021)

The 2021 Auténtico Malbec feels very young and a bit raw, like it needs a little more time. This unoaked wine was produced as an homage to the ancestral style of the zone (and to the winery when it belonged to the previous owner, the Dávalos family). It has the intensity and power of Salta and the vines at 2,300 meters in altitude, and it opens up nicely in the glass if you wait a bit. It has very good acidity, which makes it very balanced. Fifteen percent of the volume matured in concrete egg for 10 months and the rest in stainless steel. Best after 2024.

From Molinos, Calchaquí Valley, the 2020 Malbec Auténtico is unaged and presents a simple nose of ripe plum and hints of violet, gunpowder, jarilla and spices. The flavors are just as intense in the mouth with mild freshness and a juicy flow. The mild tannins lend structure before the lengthy, fruity finish. Offers a fine-grained texture, with precise red fruit and spice flavors that are well-structured and pure-tasting. The minerally finish features some peppery notes and plenty of verve. Drink now through 2025.

This very old-vine cuvée, some of it produced from ungrafted vines, sees no oak at all. Dense, compact and focused, it’s an amazing wine with layers of wild, aromatic complexity and dense, black berry fruit.
