More information on wine critics and ratings

The wine is placed in new barriques where it completes malolactic fermentation by the end of the year and is aged in barriques for about 14 months. This is followed by 12 months maturing in the bottles.

Spicy hints of cinnamon and cloves, alongside oaky and piquant peppery aromas. A rounded, creamy, sweet and well-balanced palate is followed by an aftertaste of incense, balsamic notes and cherry.

History of Antinori In 1385, the Antinori family became part of the wine business when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Vintner's Guild. Since 1966, Marchese Piero Antinori, son of Marchese Niccolò, has run the company with his daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, also playing an active role. For more than 26 generations now, Antinori's philosophy has been based on the combination of both tradition and innovation: to preserve Italy's enological… Read more

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 96 Points (2020)
A burst of red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by hints of blood orange, cinnamon, spice, dried flowers and mocha develop later. The Tignanello is wonderfully sleek and racy, with fine tannins that lie below a core of bright, sculpted fruit. The balance here is just sublime. I can’t wait to revisit the 2020 with age.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2020)
A sleek, elegant red, with fine purity to the aromas of cherry, black currant, iron, olive and tobacco. Shows new oak on the palate, lending both spice notes and structure offset by ample fruit and texture. Balanced, complex finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2047.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 93 Points (2020)
Produced from vines of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a flashier and riper style with notes of Marasca cherry liqueur, polished leather, toasted vanilla bean, and licorice candy. It is full bodied without being heavy and is rich with plum, cedar, sage, and potting soil. Raised in a combination of French and Hungarian oak barrels for approximately one year, the oak imprint is certainly felt but is very well managed, and the wine wears it well. Drink 2025-2040.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2020)
The opulent nose of vanilla, milk chocolate, coconut shavings and Luxardo cherries is echoed and then exalted on a palate with high tones of Bing cherries and raspberries and low notes of dark chocolate and black licorice, and tautly wound tannins promising longevity.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2019)
This wine sources its fruit exclusively from the Tenuta Tignanello in San Casciano Val di Pesa. The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is a generous and open-knit wine with pretty plushness and dark fruit flavors of cherry, plum and dried currant. It ages in barrique with a lot of secondhand or otherwise neutral oak, and that's why the fruit comes through with such clarity. This is one of the big surprises of this flight, and this vintage certainly punches above its price point. These results show depth, harmony and lasting fruit flavors. This is a solid recommendation. Best After 2023

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2018)
This is very lively and energetic with fine tannins and a long, focused finish. Aromatic and bright with berries, plums and flowers. Medium body. with savory acidity and a long finish. 90% sangiovese with some cabernet and merlot. Drink now.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 91 Points (2016)
This is a plush and velvety Chianti Classico, with ample notes of toasted vanilla and baking spices that cushion the red cherry and plum tones. The wine shows good freshness and acidity, suggesting a few years in the cellar will allow the fruit and oak to further integrate.

Decanter (DCT) : 90 Points (2015)
As of the 2011 vintage, the grapes for this wine come exclusively from Antinori's Tignanello vineyard in San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Similar to its big brother, Sangiovese is rounded out with Cabernet Sauvignon (plus Merlot) and ageing is in a combination of small French and Hungarian oak barrels. It's on the dark end of the fruit spectrum, revealing brambly blackberry flavours, though polished leather, tobacco and wood spice add dimension. While it is overall polished, the tannins have a stern edge.

Il Matarocchio was inspired by the desire to create, at the Guado al Tasso estate, a wine that was the maximum expression both of a single grape variety and a single vineyard plot. Il Matarocchio was born precisely from one of these sites and is a wine of great elegance and depth, one which springs exclusively from its source of origin and from a remarkable vintage.

Cont’Ugo is produced entirely with Merlot as a new interpretation of the Bolgheri territory. The vineyards grow at an altitude that varies between 45 and 60 meters (147/196 feet) above sea level on clay-loam soils that are of alluvial origin that give the wine deep complex notes while preserving the fragrance and freshness typical of Merlot berries.
