Crystallum Bona Fide Pinot Noir 2021

From a vineyard conjoining Bouchard-Finlayson with 40% whole-bunch and raised in 20% new oak, the 2013 Bona Fide Pinot Noir has a more laconic bouquet than the Cuvée Cinema with more tertiary scents of black bramble fruit, wild hedgerow and hints of marmalade loitering in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins, good depth and plenty of Pinot energy that illuminates the finish that is probably the most supple of the all the 2013 cuvées. Excellent.

Peter-Allan Finlayson makes some of the best Pinot Noirs in South Africa, typified by this plush, concentrated, textured wine. The oak is well integrated here, supported by bold, savoury fruit flavours and 30% whole bunches. A Pinot that is built to age. Drink: 2014-20

Marked oak on the nose but smart oak. Slightly smokily reductive. Wonderfully silky and delicate in texture and some finely scented red fruit on the mid palate, where the oak is barely noticeable. Very fine with depth of fruit but real lightness of touch. Seems like very sensitive winemaking.
