There is a little more Syrah in the blend of the 2014 Clos Erasmus, where it reached around 30% to complement the majority of Garnacha. As is the norm, the wine matured for some 18 months before bottling, with most of the volume in French oak barrels, 40% of which are renewed each vintage, but there are also one or two amphorae. I tasted it next to the 2013 and as the 2013 required so much attention, it took some time to get to the 2014. It showed a bit shy at first, but when I finally came back to it, I found that it had really blossomed with a mixture of violets, ground, smoky meat and black raspberries. The slight increase in Syrah was noticeable, but it somehow also seemed to increase the voice of the slate in the bottle. The palate is medium to full-bodied with terrible balance and elegance combined with inner strength. This is simply terrific. 3,000 bottles were filled at the end of May 2016.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) (AG) : 94 Points (2013)
Opaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet displays of red and dark berry preserves, potpourri and Asian spices, with a building mineral nuance. Sappy, palate-staining black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors showcountry and energy, complicated by five-spice powder and vanilla nuances on the back half. The strikingly persistent, gently tannic finish.

Stephen Tanzer (ST) : 95 Points (2012)
Bright purple. Sexy, mineral-laced aromas of black raspberry, potpourri, Asian spices and woodsmoke. Palate staining red and dark berry liqueur flavors are complemented by notes of lavender, spicecake and bitter chocolate, with a minerally quality adding lift, vivacity and focus. Closes extremely long, with superb clarity, sneaky tannins and a whiplash of candied flowers.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17+ Points (2012)
85% Garnacha. 15% Syrah. Mid cherry red. Intense nose - concentrated cherryade with iron filings in it. Broad and quite simple still it's all hidden underneath. Quite marked acidity. Lots of freshness. Still very tense.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2012)
Wild berry and kirsch flavors show a racy character in this expressive red. Baking spice, licorice and fresh herb flavors add interest, while firm tannins and balsamic acidity lend structure. Drink now through 2020.
