Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2018)
The 2018 The Chocolate Block is sourced from the Goldmine and Porseleinberg farms, the Cabernet originating from Voor-Paaderberg, and matured for 16 months in used oak barrels. It offers generous black plum and black currant aromas, pressed rose petals and a touch of menthol. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and much more structured than the vintages of old (as I have pointed out in previous reviews), displaying fennel, bay leaf and white pepper toward the finish. This feels long in the mouth. A classy Chocolate Block that treads a fine line between commercial and intellectual appeal.

Tim Atkin (TA) : 93 Points (2017)
One of South Africa’s most successful brands, selling at a price that many producers can only dream of, this Syrah-based cuvée with Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier is smooth, youthful and floral, with Asian spices, bramble and blueberry fruit, some tannic backbone and the potential to age further in bottle. 2020-26.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2017)
Shortly into taking notes on this wine, I gave up and wrote, “Oh yum.” With less syrah and more grenache and cinsault than the 2016, it’s super-floral and spicy, with a crushed-berry freshness to the fruit that makes it immediately appealing. Stay with it for a few moments and it develops the savor of a steak cooked black and blue, the bloody tang of the meat and smokiness of the grill marks adding a deep savor. Poured blind, it’d be easily confused for a top Rhône grenache—at least, until the price is revealed.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2017)
A blend of 64% Syrah, 14% Grenache, 11% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier, the 2017 Chocolate Block is dense, rich and fully complex. The nose is filled with red and black fruits and black spices, with well-integrated oak tones of vanilla and nutmeg. There is an underlying minerality about the wine as well. On the palate, the wine is bold and chewy with a tight mineral and tannic grip. The mid-palate is loaded with blackberries, black pepper, dark chocolate and dusty plum. The finish is long and delivers a focused expression of a serious wine and will need time to age, or you will have to enjoy it with a hearty meal to tame the tannins. The full-bodied wine ends with a long finish.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16 Points (2016)
Tasted Oct 2017 - Now all Swartland, I see. Bright crimson. Definitely not chocolatey any more. Grainy and almost Grenachey but that is just 11% and Syrah dominates the blend. Chewy end. Still quite young. Grainy tannins. A little drying on the finish for now.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 88 Points (2013)
Web only 2015 - An old-school style, with signed alder, coffee and sweet earth notes peeking out from the core of steeped plum and black currant fruit. The slightly rugged finish lets loam and tobacco hints squeeze through. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault and Viognier.
